Become an AALHE Volunteer!

The AALHE volunteer community is an active group of assessment professionals who help improve and sustain AALHE. As a volunteer, you can make valuable professional connections, share your skills, and help AALHE continually improve by serving on an AALHE committee.

Our committees are currently recruiting for the July 2021 - June 2022 year. New and existing members are encouraged to get involved. To be considered, please submit the volunteer form linked below. We strongly recommend that you consider a three-year commitment and engagement expectations when signing up to volunteer for a committee.

Note: Only members who have paid their annual membership dues are eligible to volunteer. If you’re not yet a member you can become a member when you complete the volunteer form.

The committee needs listed below indicate possible ways volunteers can support AALHE. These skills are not required to volunteer as there are many ways all members can contribute!

AALHE Standing Committees 2021-2022

Communications Committee: coordinate, develop, and disseminate information via AALHE social media accounts, Assess listserv, and our member newsletter to promote events and professional development opportunities on a regular basis.  Needs: 1) social media engagers with active experiences or interest in one or more platforms (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, or LinkedIn) to help lead or co-lead our engagement within the higher education community and 2) those experienced/interested in basic graphic design to assist in the creation of images/graphics using Canva to help promote AALHE activities. Basic training in social media platforms and graphic design is available.

Conference Committee: coordinate the annual conference, including the following: solicit and review proposals, recommend keynote speakers, recruit and train session moderators, plan new attendee orientation and networking events, evaluate conference and use findings, and recommend future locations. Needs: event planning, proposal reviews, and volunteer management.

Finance Committee: review financial data and prepare a budget; make financial policy recommendations.

President's Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: promote diversity, equity, and inclusion among assessment practitioners and among the members of AALHE; provides recommendations on how to promote DEI in relation to all functions of the organization; and provides consultation to existing AALHE committees to support them as they integrate DEI principles into their work. 

Professional Development Committee: Professional Development Committee: Create and coordinate professional development activities through curated key competency resources for assessment professionals.

Subcommittees include 1) Assessment Certification; 2) Topical Interest Groups; and 3) Webinars. Needs: Research/Develop/Lead/Manage subcommittee meetings, online professional development, the match program, and webinars. Leaders and members will adapt or refine the authentic leadership style. 

Publications Committee: Coordinate and develop publications on student learning assessment for the advancement of knowledge. Review and edit manuscripts prior to publication. Recommend topics and promote articles or issues and call for proposals. Subcommittees 1) Intersection, 2) Emerging Dialogues, and 3) Conference Proceedings.

Infrastructure Committee: ensure viability of the organization by drafting and organizing policy, managing board nominations and elections, managing the quality of the member experience on the website, and conducting the environmental scan of emergent topics, issues, and needs. Needs: policy work, research skills, strategic planning (big picture thinking/understanding), adwords campaigning, google analytics, and web experience.  A "willingness to learn" is more important in the various skill areas than having expertise.

Recruitment and Retention Committee: analyze membership data; recruit & retain members; annually survey members; make recommendations of the conditions under which membership is established and renewed; manage the placement of member volunteers. Needs: develop/lead/manage retention programs, experience in survey design, marketing, and innovation.
