Upcoming Webinar - Designing Assessments of Student Learning to Support Equity

To achieve equity in higher education, we must understand the circumstances under which assessment and assignment choices contribute to the perpetuation of equity gaps. In this webinar we teach participants about our model of culturally relevant assessment (Singer-Freeman, Hobbs, & Robinson, 2019), introduce a measure that can be used to evaluate the inclusiveness of classroom assignments, and discuss evidence-based methods that measure learning equally for all groups of students. Participants will gain an understanding of best practices that support increased equity in the assessment of student learning.

Dr. Christine Robinson is the Executive Director of the Office of Assessment and Accreditation at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she leads a team that promotes continuous improvement in student learning, educational practices, and support services.  Dr. Robinson organizes and facilitates campus and UNC System level assessment and accreditation efforts.  As the University’s Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges liaison, she coordinates and compiles University-wide compliance documentation. She co-chairs the Grand Challenges in Assessment Project, a national initiative to create a strategic plan for assessment in higher education. Dr. Robinson received her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instructional Leadership from Vanderbilt University. Her research examines the effects of classroom assessment on equity gaps and interventions that support student success. Previously, Dr. Robinson served as the Dean of Business and Information Technology and the Dean of Planning, Assessment and Quality Improvement at Seminole State College, the Associate Dean of Business and Information Systems at Waubonsee Community College, and the Director of Academic Affairs at Indiana Institute of Technology.  Her more than 21 years of administrative experience includes collaborating with and leading faculty and staff in the assessment of educational practices and programs and institutional effectiveness. 

Ms. Harriet Hobbs is the Director of Assessment Systems and University Accreditation at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she provides leadership, direction, and support for student learning, assessment, and SACSCOC accreditation. Previously, she served as the Director of Institutional Planning, Assessment, Effectiveness and Research at Johnson C. Smith University, and the Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning at Bladen Community College. Her 19 years of experience includes providing leadership for strategic planning, assessment, accreditation, institutional research, supporting teaching and learning, and promoting continuous improvement. She holds an M.S. in Public Administration and is currently completing her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. Her research examines the effects of noncognitive factors and equitable assessment practices for students of color. Harriet was a Campus Labs finalist in Exemplifying Great Collaboration across Divisions and the Campus. She was recognized and honored as Bladen Community College’s Staff Member of the Year.

Dr. Karen Singer-Freeman is the Director of Academic Planning and Assessment in the Office of Assessment and Accreditation at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she works with faculty and staff to support program reviews and strategic planning. She co-chairs the Grand Challenges in Assessment Project, a national project to create a strategic plan for assessment in higher education. Dr. Singer-Freeman holds a BA in psychology and anthropology from the University of Michigan, a Ph.D. in cognitive developmental psychology from the University of Minnesota and completed post-doctoral work at Cambridge University and University College London. Previously, Dr. Singer-Freeman served as Chair of the Psychology Department and the director and associate director of two NIH/NIGMS funded programs for science students at Purchase College, State University of New York. Dr. Singer-Freeman’s research examines effects of classroom assessments on equity gaps and educational interventions that support student success. She received the Purchase College Guiding Light Award for Excellence in Mentorship, the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and was named a Scientific Thinking and Integrative Reasoning Scholar by the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
